Circumvent The Sea Of Unsolicited Advice

In the world of weddings, unwanted opinions flow like champagne at a reception. From “Save money by making your own wedding cake” to “Why don’t you have your long-lost second cousin be your ring bearer?” – you’re suddenly surrounded by experts armed with Pinterest boards whose only qualification is binge-watching wedding shows in their free time. “While each situation is unique, a good starting point would be the awareness that there could be certain decisions that will be made keeping the wishes of other members in the family and some that can be exclusively for the couple to decide,” says Mumbai-based psychologist Aekta Brahmbhatt. When faced with a situation where a bride’s mother-in-law requests her to wear the ensemble she herself had donned on her own wedding day, what are the options available to the bride? “It’s important for the bride to be clear about what she wants and to express her desire keeping in mind that there will be a sentimental value attached to the wedding dress and how she feels about it,” Aekta points out. “Ideally, a win-win situation is where a middle ground can be found. Refurbishing the outfit to a modern style or wearing it for one of the other wedding functions is always an alternative.”

Make It Past The Money

It’s very easy for the burn in your pocket to turn into a full-fledged argument with your partner when you’re trying to find common ground with regard to wedding expenses. Differing financial priorities, says Aekta, are largely to blame. “A good start is to prioritise the aspects of the wedding that are most important to the couple. They can then decide which aspects can be changed or resolved and which ones cannot. Making a list of negotiable and non-negotiable items would give the couple a clear understanding of what is really important to each of the  partners.”  Should you do something lavish or more budget-friendly? Should the money being spent on the wedding be invested elsewhere, such as in the down payment on a house or used to save for future goals? What many couples fail to do is have open conversations about financial planning and money management both during wedding planning and beyond. Aekta points out that problems can arise between partners with different financial orientations – one emphasising security and the other favouring a more carefree, in-the-moment approach. “Money has a metaphoric meaning in our life and represents certain aspects such as safety, security, nurturing, opportunity, trust, experience and the dynamics of dependence and independence. Thus, it presents itself as a multilayered problem for couples, with several recurring themes surfacing in their relationship,” she concludes.

Navigate The Guest List Maze

According to Delhi-based clinical psychologist and marriage counsellor Dr Neha Mehta, family and societal pressure often play a significant role in shaping wedding guest lists – which can lead to potential conflicts between personal desires and external influences.

Think of the uncle you haven’t had any contact with in the past decade, the NRI cousin who has consistently been unpleasant in all your interactions, or the distant mausi who still struggles to get your name right. “It is important for the couple to establish their boundaries and understand that it is their special day, where they have the right to invite those who are truly important to them,” avers Dr Neha. “Try having conversations with family members; express gratitude for their input while respectfully asserting your own independence,” she suggests.

Navigating the complexities of divorced parents within the wedding party is a plot twist, which, when executed with finesse, will only prove that love truly does conquer all – even the occasional family feud. “Setting boundaries and clear expectations is important to define the roles and responsibilities of each parent during the festivities,” Dr Neha points out. “Separate arrangements, such as seating during the ceremony or reception, that allow both parents to have equal prominence and avoid any perception of favouritism can be considered to create a more peaceful environment. If conflicts are likely, designate a trusted family member or friend as a mediator to help manage disagreements.”

Manage The Venue Verdict

In this age of modern weddings, choosing the perfect venue has evolved from a cute dream to a full-blown battlefield. From picturesque mountaintops to rustic vineyards, the appetite for ‘different’ destinations is often  a source of recurring conflict.

Couples should consider a venue that offers event planning services and onsite catering to reduce the need for additional vendors,” Dr Neha advises. “They must also evaluate amenities such as parking space, air conditioning, and dance floors. Overall, keeping an open mind and prioritising what’s important can help couples find the perfecf venue within their budget and ensure a memorable wedding experience.”  As someone who has seen it all, she also sheds light on the red flags that indicate that a couple’s disagreement could be about more than just the wedding venue itself: “Extreme differences in preferences, stubbornness, or an inability to reach a compromise suggest that the location disagreement might  be rooted in deeper issues within the relationship, such as communication problems or differing values.” The key lies in taking the time to understand each other's reasons for making a particular choice, compromising and coming to a decision that incorporates the preferences of both the partners. “Seeking the assistance of a professional, such as a couples therapist or an experienced wedding planner, can provide an objective perspective,” she adds.

Splitting The Planning Duties

If planning a wedding wasn’t overwhelming enough, DIY-ing it is sure to raise the stakes. Often, this can result in one partner feeling overburdened and perceiving their counterpart to be not actively participating in the wedding planning process. Shivani Misri Sadhoo, a psychologist, relationships expert and founder of Delhi-based Saarthi Counselling Services, offers her insights on striking a balance in responsibilities and tasks:  Open A Dialogue: Start with an open and honest conversation about your expectations and preferences regarding wedding planning responsibilities. Understand each other’s strengths, interests, and time constraints. Divide And Conquer: Create a checklist of all the tasks that need to be completed. Then, allocate responsibilities based on each partner’s abilities, interests and time constraints. Ensure that the division of tasks is equitable. Set Priorities: Identify the most important aspects of the wedding for both partners. Allocate more time and attention to these areas, while being more flexible with less critical elements. Check In Regularly: Schedule regular check-in meetings to update each other on progress, discuss any challenges, and provide support. This ensures that both partners are on the same page and can offer each other assistance where needed. Delegate And Outsource: Don’t hesitate to delegate certain tasks to trusted friends or family members, or consider hiring professionals such as a wedding planner or caterer for specific aspects of the process. Prioritise Self-Care: Encourage each other to prioritise self-care and stress management throughout the planning process. Spend non-wedding planning time together to strengthen your emotional connection.

Be Prepared For The Unexpected

Perhaps your vendor with the flawless off-white lilies suddenly cancels at the eleventh hour. Maybe the fireworks refuse to ignite on schedule, or the weather gods conspire to rain on your parade. A wedding, while being a labour of love brimming with anticipation and excitement, also has its own way of surprising you with unforeseen changes. In such moments, the ability to mentally prepare becomes invaluable for couples embarking on the journey to forever. “This involves open communication, a willingness to embrace imperfections, and a strategic approach to contingency planning,” says Shivani. “Ultimately, mental preparedness not only ensures a smoother execution of the event but also strengthens the bond between partners as they face and overcome these unexpected challenges together.” She breaks it down into three easy steps: “First and foremost, active listening is important. Each partner should take the time to fully understand the other’s perspective, concerns, and preferences. This fosters empathy and a sense of being heard. Next, couples must practise assertive communication, expressing their own needs and concerns by using ‘I’ statements as opposed to making accusatory or blaming statements. Lastly, both partners should be willing to give and take, finding a middle ground that accommodates their desires and respects their priorities. Flexibility is vital, as it allows couples to adapt to changing circumstances while keeping their shared goals in mind.” Also Read: Celebrity Weddings Unveiled: Lessons & Inspiration For Your Big Day
